    Cannes Confirmation

Here is an article titled "Dreamgirls Peek is Nightmare for Cannes Purists" that confirms that Dreamgirls will be at Cannes. They are showing a 20 minutes clip of the film. However, what I found interesting about the article is that the "purists" of Cannes are going to be angry because they feel like Cannes has been catering to big hollywood movies. I understand their anger or reluctance but I also think that just because you have a big budget and lots of Hollywood backing does not automatically mean that your movie will be crap. If anything Cannes should be a place that all movies can be judged, big budget and indie alike. However, I thnk once they see th eclip those purists will forget why they are angry. Anyway, here is an excerpt of the article:

Cannes organisers are to screen 20 minutes of Dreamgirls, starring Beyonce Knowles, Eddie Murphy and Jamie Foxx, next month - a move likely to further incense purists who fear the festival is abandoning its artistic roots and kowtowing to Hollywood's commercial mandate.

Cannes' prestigious annual line-up attracts the biggest critics in the world and enjoys blanket media coverage, providing Hollywood executives with a gilt-edged promotional opportunity for upcoming releases.

The excerpt from Bill Condon's Broadway adaptation, which stars Knowles as part of a 1960s soul trio and is supposedly loosely based on the story of the Supremes, will be the third of its kind to play on the Croisette next month.

Already scheduled are segments of Oliver Stone's 9/11 epic World Trade Center, starring Nic Cage, and Irwin Winkler's Iraq war drama Home of the Brave, which stars rapper 50 Cent, Samuel Jackson and Jessica Biel.
Dreamgirls wrapped two weeks ago and is set to open in US cinemas on December 21.

    Everybody Hates Dreamgirls

Hey everyone, the news is a little slow on Dreamgirls. However, with the help of someone's watchful eye I came upon an interesting episode of Everybody Hates Chris that will be airing on May 18, 2006. It's titled "Everybody Hates Dreamgirls". It's the season finale and so far the description is this: "Julius' plans to see 'Dreamgirls' with Rochelle for their anniversary gets thwarted". So who knows, maybe there might be some kind of special treat in there related to the upcoming movie. Also, delm06 over at imdb.com pointed out that Everybody Hates Chris is filmed on Paramounts lot who is also helping to put out Dreamgirls. Anyway, you can check out the link for yourself. Stay tuned for more details as they come in.

Danny Glover Predicts A Legacy for Dreamgirls

Danny Glover Says 'Dreamgirls' Will Be Something Special

Danny Glover has hailed forthcoming movie Dreamgirls as one of the most powerful films that will ever seen. The actor insists the movie, based on the award-winning Broadway musical, will be talked about for years to come.

Glover stars alongside Jamie Foxx, Beyonce Knowles and Eddie Murphy in the tale of a black all-girl singing trio from Chicago who are propelled to fame, and he is certain the performances will match the caliber of seminal race movie The Color Purple, in which he also starred.
He says, "Dreamgirls is something very special. It has such a strong appeal, even 25 years since its release on stage. This is going to be quite powerful. In 20 years time they're going to be talking about it in the way they talk about The Color Purple."

    OSCAR BUZZ and NEW SONGS!

Dreaming of Oscar With big stars and a killer pedigree, Dreamgirls may be poised to sing a song of victory next year.

    STEVE DALYDAVE KARGER

It won't be on screens for eight months--in fact, it only wrapped last week--but awards-season murmurs are swirling around Dreamgirls, the film version of Michael Bennett's 1981 stage musical about a Supremes-style trio torn up by backstage politics. The show's best- known song ends with the command "You're gonna love me"--a phrase that aptly describes the super-early campaign for the DreamWorks/ Paramount flick. The push started Feb. 27, in mid-production, when the studio ushered hundreds of media folks into a downtown L.A. theater to meet Jamie Foxx (he's Curtis, a Berry Gordy-ish talent manager) and Beyonce Knowles (she's Deena, a Diana Ross type). MIA that night: press-shy Eddie Murphy, whose dance routine as James "Thunder" Early was taken over by costar Keith Robinson. Next came the ShoWest convention in mid-March, where a "Star of Tomorrow" award went to Jennifer Hudson, the brassy, big-voiced American Idol contestant from season 3 who plays the brassy, big-voiced singer Effie. (Tony winner Anika Noni Rose plays a third member of the group, Lorrell.)

So will it live up to the hype? EW got an early look and saw some arresting stuff, including Beyonce resplendent in a disco-era silver- lame cape and long, corkscrew-curl wig, and Hudson warming up for a smackdown song with Foxx. But while the stars and the studio seem confident, Bill Condon (who directed Kinsey) is behind the cameras sweating every detail and worrying how it'll go over--especially a host of Act 2 changes. There will also be four new songs, including an "11 o'clock number" for Beyonce titled "Listen" and a paean sung by Hudson called "Love You I Do." Frets Condon, "They'll be saying, 'He changed this, he changed that.' I mean, that's what I would say." The studio reps are betting critics and award balloters won't sing the same lament.

    It's A Wrap!

Filming is complete on the highly anticipated movie Dreamgirls. It wrapped at 6:56 a.m. PST with Hudson nailing the last few bits of 'And I am telling you'. I am hearing that Jennifer was the last actor to wrap. I can not believe that its all done filming. Well, I posted a picture of the main cast to remind everyone what wonderful talent is involved in the movie. We should all wish them luck as they go into the editing phase. Be on the look out for more news soon because they will be showing a portion of the film in Cannes this summer. More than likely some of the cast will be there so that should be fun to get some early interviews after all the months the cast spent filming. Stay tuned, the best is yet to come.
